Stalingrad is a classic arrangement: two bases at opposite ends of a war-torn city with plenty of carnage in between. For that reason, Stalingrad is easily one of my favorite maps in all of CoD: WW2. First up is Market Garden, which takes place at a mansion in the Netherlands. The center of the map is laid out well for Domination and other similar game modes, except that camping is extremely easy and rampant. Overall, Market Garden is just fine, but it feels a whole lot like what CoD: WW2 already has plenty of: smaller scale, close-quarters maps. Something like this in Advanced Warfare or Black Ops 3 might fare better because you can easily scale and access high points in those games, but as it stands it just feels a little tedious. It probably also represents the most that can be squeezed out of the venerable Quake III engine. The first mission of the British campaign has you manning bomber turrets, and you've probably seen the screenshots and video clips by now: it's gorgeous. They've really outdone themselves. Still, in apparently attempting to trump the original in drama, they too often end up pummeling the player with an avalanche of combat targets. If you dug Call of Duty, you'll dig United Offensive, but get comfortable with the Quicksave and Quickload keys. It's certainly not bad and is enjoyable throughout, but it just doesn't excel in a single area. The brilliant concept of following three individual stories of the Allied campaign against the Nazis has been watered down with too many perspectives and no cohesive or interesting story. I cared nothing for any of the characters and felt like I was just going through the motions the entire game. A lack of checkpoints in the majority of levels is questionable and sometimes frustrating. Finest Hour had the pedigree to become the finest console World War II game, but in the end fails to bring any spark or intensity to a story about courage and sacrifice. Date:February 28, 2008 Make no mistake, Call of Duty 3 is a great game. Its one of the best looking titles on 360 and the multiplayer mode is a welcome addition. What keeps the score slightly below the last installment is the nearly identical gameplay and stiff competition within the genre. When you see another WWII shooter sitting on the shelf next to Gears of War and FEAR you may reevaluate going back into the trenches. But if wartime shooters are your thing, this is as good as it gets on a console. Date: November 28, 2007 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a fantastic game. The single-player experience is easily Infinity Ward's best work to date. Calling it intense may be an understatement. The overall story is standard action movie fare, but the relationships built over the short five hours of play are surprisingly strong. Though the single-player lacks length, the multiplayer should keep you invested in COD4 for the long winter. This is a truly fantastic multiplayer offering that's as deep as any other online game available. Date: November 12, 2008 It's easy to be jaded about World War II shooters, but Treyarch makes a convincing argument to stay excited with World at War. The game is packed with a deep amount of gameplay to appeal to every type of player, from those who want to experience a gritty single-player campaign to those who like to play with their friends to those who just like to play multiplayer. This is a solid, confident shooter with plenty to offer the casual and hardcore alike. A lack of online multiplayer or co-op and an overpowering sense that you've done all this before -- multiple times, in fact -- dilutes any of the impact that Final Fronts could have had. There are moments where it's fun, sure, but does it come close to the advancements to the series in recent years? Hardly, and thus it's really not worth your time. Date: November 10, 2009 When you look at the total package, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is hands-down one of the best first-person shooters out there, and a truly amazing offering across any system. With that being said, our score comes with a disclaimer. For those planning to check out everything Modern Warfare 2 has to offer: online competition, full co-op Spec Ops mode, as well as the campaign, you're looking at a no-brainer purchase. For the strictly single player crowd, however, Modern Warfare 2 is surprisingly short, and doesn't live up to the standard set by previous Call of Duty games. The campaign can be completed in as little as four and a half hours, and the missions make better scenarios and moment-to-moment adrenaline rushes than they do a cohesive, well-told story. If you're going solo, you've officially been warned. Look at the complete Modern Warfare 2 experience though, and there's no denying its rightful place at the top. Date: November 10, 2009 If you played and enjoyed last year's Call of Duty: World at War on DS, then you can expect to like Moblized. It brings the war to modern times once more while sticking to the same winning formula. Shooting, manning stationary guns, and getting behind the wheels of some heavy machinery are all part of the classic Call of Duty package and the DS crowd isn't missing out on the fun. The controls won't be ideal for everyone, so give Mobilized a try on a friend's system before you take the plunge if you can. The same goes for the look. Even so, this is one fully featured package and a technically impressive game that successfully takes Call of Duty to the handheld while bringing its own unique presentation to the table. Date: November 9, 2010 Call of Duty: Black Ops is a great overall package that has a ton of content to enjoy. The multiplayer modes are largely based on what was established by Modern Warfare, but the twists that Treyarch throws in work well. My biggest issue with the multiplayer is that the new Wager Matches, while fun in their own right, don't compare favorably to the high-quality and addictive leveling system and game modes from Modern Warfare 1 and 2. Single-player is as exhaustingly fast-paced as ever with large set pieces that try to take the attention off of the lackluster AI of both friends and enemies. That withstanding, the story is the best I've ever seen from a Call of Duty game. Couple both of those substantial offerings with more Zombie content than some full-fledged zombie games and Black Ops is certainly worth your time, even if you aren't already a fan of the series. Date: November 8, 2011 Despite its flaws, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 takes the fantastic series we've come to love over the years and iterates on it with great success. The multiplayer is hands-down the best it has ever been, with more features, more modes and a ton of new levels and ways to interact via Call of Duty Elite. The singleplayer campaign and Spec Ops mode add value to the overall package, creating something that may not be perfect, but is too damn addicting to pass up. Date: November 13, 2012 The team at Treyarch could have played it safe and Black Ops II would have sold well, but instead they challenged assumptions and pushed the series forward in awesome new directions. Combined with the host of subtle and overt improvements to the array of other systems, the additions to make it more appealing to Esports, and the more fleshed out Zombies mode, this is not just a fantastic Call of Duty game, but one of the best shooters of the last decade. By designing the levels in the campaign, co-op, and multiplayer to facilitate those new mechanics, Advanced Warfare is granted a weight and importance that changes how the fast-paced shooting action feels in all three modes. This is a Call of Duty game to its core, but one that rehashes as little as possible while still retaining its strengths. For Operation Supercharge the battle moves to a sandy Tunisian location in which Allied soldiers airdrop into the skirmish to try and capture a Nazi-occupied village and gain important supplies, blow up a bridge, and then capture key objectives at the end. It starts out on a high note as Allied forces have to capture supplies that are literally raining down from the sky, adding a lot of nuance and excitement that makes each match play out a bit differently. And the undead cherry on top of the United Front sundae is The Tortured Path, a multi-chapter Zombies map. Instead of just being one large Zombies map with an endless stream of undead to kill, Tortured Path is actually more like three smaller maps that stand on their own as you progress through them. The first chapter is mostly outdoors with a collection of small buildings surrounding a courtyard full of vehicles. Between buildings there are lots of tight corridors and some of the objectives are extremely tough given how wide open most of the map is. Chapter two takes place on a boat and features some excellent particle and weather physics. The final chapter, and the toughest of the bunch, is an underground ice cavern with lots of entry points for the hordes to flank and swarm. Objectives are randomized for each map and consist of things like repairing valves, defending a machine, or stopping a specific zombie from reaching its destination. Instead of pre-determined weapons dispersed at specific locations that you can save up for, you instead spend points on random weapons. The Verdict Call of Duty: WW2 - United Front is a bit all over the place. The three new multiplayer maps do very little to deliver anything fresh or new, and the new War mission is also mostly more of the same.
